Comet McNaught seen from Dubbo

Posted 1 year, 5 months ago at 5:34 pm. 4 comments

Over the last couple of weeks the Comet McNaught has been able to be seen in the South West sky of Dubbo, NSW. I went outside expecting to spend 30 minutes searching for it, but it was obviously visible to the naked eye and you could not miss it if you were looking into the western sky.

Here are some photos:

On holidays it’s great to find a local mechanic who you know will do the job well, but won’t overcharge you or do more than you need. In Dubbo, Forro is that mechanic. He does a great job.

Forro’s Auto Repairs is at 84 Myall Street, from Erskine Street (Officeworks, Supa-Cheap Auto, Clarke’s Rubber, Astley’s hardware, Challenge Office Supplies, Furney’s Town and Country) head out the Gilgandra Road, and turn right at Macca’s Auto Electrical into Myall Street. Forro’s is on the left. They sponsor a local girl’s basketball team.

Dubbo has a great 27 hole golf course on the Parkes Road. It has a modern fairways restaurant and lovely green fairways in a quiet bush setting.

Dubbo Radio Stations

While you are in Dubbo be sure to listen to one of the local radio stations.

I’ve quite enjoyed listening to Dubbo’s Country Mix FM lately. It has a very ‘Country’ feel, it is on FM 87.6

Also you can catch the local sheep prices and so-on on ABC NSW local radio at 95.9 FM.

The more commercial style stations are Zoo FM (92.7) and Star FM (93.5).

For a more talkback style with local issues, 2DU Dubbo on AM 1251.

We were on holidays with the caravan in Lismore when our exhaust blew a hole, we managed to find a great fellow who fixed it on the spot and we were on our way.

In Dubbo, that fellow is Mark at Dynaflow Exhausts. Drive in, and if you are travelling and in an emergency I’m sure he’ll do it on the spot. He has a good selction of exhausts ready to go. If not, he’ll be able to recommend where to get one quickly. And he does a great job. After fitting our last exhaust he spend some extra time tracing a rattle that turned out to be a loose engine mount - thanks Mark!

Farmer’s Choice Butchery

Great Butcher, Great Service, Great Meat. They sell fresh chooks from GIlgandra Poultry. Plenty of cuts of meat from roasts, eye fillets and cattlemans cutlets, down to crumbed lamb cutlets and marinated ready to go stir-frys and the like.  The shop has that old fashioned good butcher smell. They have one shop in Darling Street and one in the Riverdale Mall.

Geocaching - a high-tech treasure hunt where you track down caches hidden by other players. All that is needed to play is a portable Global Positioning System, access to the internet and a sense of adventure. The is growing, with over 7,000 caches in Australia. Usually the is played solo or in small teams, with the focus on quiet enjoyment of the environment. It is organised on the internet at websites like geocaching.com.au . This weekend’s event in Dubbo has been planned for 12 months as a chance for geocachers to get together and catch up as well as get out and go geocaching together. Most of the visiting teams will camping out together for the whole weekend, and while there will be a little bit of a competitive element with major prizes donated by Globalsat (http://www.globalsatgps.com.au/) the main focus will be on socializing and enjoying the local outdoor environment. A similar event last year saw 50 people visit Dubbo and many of those coming this year are repeat visitors from last year or have heard from those who were here last year how great the Geocaching is in Dubbo.
