Farmer’s Choice Butchery

Great Butcher, Great Service, Great Meat. They sell fresh chooks from GIlgandra Poultry. Plenty of cuts of meat from roasts, eye fillets and cattlemans cutlets, down to crumbed lamb cutlets and marinated ready to go stir-frys and the like.  The shop has that old fashioned good butcher smell. They have one shop in Darling Street and one in the Riverdale Mall.

Fresh Seafood

Every Thursday the Atlantic Fresh van comes to Dubbo, and there’s always a great selection of fish fresh from the Sydney markets. It parks at the service station in front of Harvey Norman on Cobra Street, about half way between Orana Mall and Macquarie Street.

Personally I love the flathead, although you need to get in early because it must be a local favourite, it always sells fast. There’s a slightly different selection each week, but always prawns, calamari, mussels, and a selection of fish such as salmon, deep sea perch, gemfish, barramundi, and other fish which I don’t really know very well but we certainly are eating more fish since the fresh van has been coming to Dubbo!

Newtown Providores

Newtown Providores is one of Dubbo’s greatest small business success stories, a gourmet deli that has absolutely everything that Coles and Woolworths doesn’t.

Buffalo cheese, goats cheese, every cheese under the sun, vanilla pods, herbs and spices, more herbs and spices, exotic pasta, chunky red pesto dip, sourdough bread, french truffles, salad dressings, organic chicken, the best ham in Dubbo (by a long mile), fresh kaffir lime leaves, and the list goes on, and on, and on!

If you visit, make sure you leave plenty of time for a browse of the wares and a chat to the friendly staff. It’s the brainchild of Peter Davis, a man as passionate about his food as he is about science, and let me tell you, Peter is passionate about his science!

They also serve great and generally have a copy of the local paper to read.

It’s at 62 Wingewarra Street, ph 6882 0055.

Peter also runs a float at every Farmer’s markets.

Muffin Break

muffin.jpgThere’s a Muffin break in Dubbo’s Centro Mall on the South End of Macquarie Street. I go there quite regularly for a muffin and . is pretty good. Same with Muffins. It’s in a busy spot - I like feel of people walking past from Coles as I read the free local Newspaper they provide.

Come on down to the local Farmer’s Markets and you’ll meet all kinds of locals out for a browse. The markets are on the first and third Saturdays of the month in Dubbo, usually in the park alongside the Tourist Information Centre at the North end of Macquarie Street, but in rainy whether they often move into the RSL undercover carpark.
You’ll find all sorts of Fresh Produce including fruit and vegetables, organic produce, poultry, saltbush lamb, olive oil, wine, sourdough bread, as well as fresh and food. There are also usually plant stalls - including native plants, flowers and vegetable seedlings. On special occasions you may be lucky enough to see a cooking demonstration from a local cheff or some live jazz music.

The Mall at the South end of Macquarie Street.
It has Coles, Target, health food and clothing shops, a food court with Muffin Break, juice shop, donuts and great at Gloria Jeans , and pretty good kebabs. Public too.
