The Western Plains Zoo is a ’must see’ if you are in Dubbo. It has over half a million visitors a year. Make sure you allow a couple of days to look around the zoo. A one day admission gets you in free for a second day as well. It’s best to go as early as you can in the day when most of the animals are awake.
Hiring Bikes is a good option - take plenty of water!
Click here for the official site, or click here to find out the current admission prices, and notice that if you prepay online you save 10%.
The Otters are a hit for the kids, make sure you see them at a feeding time when they go chasing prawns. The Siamung Apes are crazy and fun, feeding time is just after lunch and well worth it, they put on a spectacular show.

Over the last couple of weeks the Comet McNaught has been able to be seen in the South West sky of Dubbo, NSW. I went outside expecting to spend 30 minutes searching for it, but it was obviously visible to the naked eye and you could not miss it if you were looking into the western sky.
Here are some photos:

Comet viewed from Dubbo and from Siding Springs Observatory at Connabarabran, just north of Dubbo.

Another photo from Siding Springs.
There’s more great photos here.

In 2007 the Junior World Orienteering Championships will be held in Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia!!!!
What the Junior World Orienteering Championships are, I don’t know, but it sounds good, and they have a website here:
http://www.jwoc2007.orienteering.asn.au/
and here:
http://www.westernplainscarnival.asn.au/
Here’s what it says:
These Championships are being organised by Orienteering NSW on behalf of Orienteering Australia.

It is located in the heart of the state at the junction of major east-west and north-south road networks. It is accessible by road, rail and air.
